On the Future of Umai Fansubs

So obviously there has been some major drama going on around here lately. The good news is that we’re finished Basquash! and everyone in Umai has calmed down a bit.

We considered doing Book of Bantorra this fall season if we got a TLC, but sadly no one volunteered (as far as I know). I personally am happy about that, because Book of Bantorra is a bad show, like 99% of the fall shows I’ve seen so far.

Winter season looks, so far, to be full of fail as well. While we may find a 12-ish-episode show in winter to sub, it’s kind of unlikely. Lots of the staff are taking reduced roles in fansubbing (note that we are all in several groups, not just Umai) due to school, work, etc, and this raises our standards for what we want to volunteer what little spare time we have for. That means that we’re not going to pick up a shitty series just ’cause it’s the “best of the worst” or something like that. If a good series that’s not being subbed by anyone good comes along, we’ll pick it up if we have the staff. That might mean waiting until winter season or spring season.

See where I said “if we have the staff”? That’s important. The truth is that we could pick up a fall show if we wanted to. We just don’t feel that there’s anything worth our time (as I explained above). If a new translator came along, or a new editor or a new timer, etc, we could probably put together a team of people to do a fall show (though soon it would probably be too late, so maybe this is more for the winter season). Quality could be maintained by the existing translator doing TLC (less time-intensive than translating), existing editors and QCers making sure editing and other aspects are up to Umai standards, etc. So if you’re interested in any position, head over to #umai @ irc.rizon.net and message me (Calan) and we’ll see if we can put together a team. Otherwise, the Umai “veterans” will just wait until we find a good show to do – whenever that may be.

From all the staff, we hope you’ve enjoyed Basquash! for the past 26 (probably more than that) weeks and we look forward to finding another show to fansub.

Basquash! 26

K, it’s done. See, I never said it wasn’t going to be done, I just said I didn’t know when. So, enjoy the ending to this clusterfuck of wtf of a show. FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!! Would’ve been done last night had timer not been afk!

Basquash! 26 torrent

Also, just in case I get complaints on huge filesize. There’s a reason, laziness. I just set encoder to crf 18 and let her rip. I did do a 400mb 2pass encode and it still didn’t look that good to me so opted for the method that scales based on quality at the expense of a controlled filesize. Either way… um… yeah!

Interface’s giant rant

Ok, so I’m writing this post to address some things since people like to whine and bitch about release times, not being informed status of projects, etc etc.

Issue #1: “ZOMG, WHY YOU SO SLOW, HURRY UP AND RELEASE”

First and foremost, I’m not your servant. I’ll do what I want and when I want to. Yes, outside of translation, timing, and qc (whenever the fuck it is qc’ed), I do everything. I’ve done it for 23 eps (some kind folks filled in during the other 2 eps) and to be frank, I’m burnt out and tired.  It doesn’t help that the show started out with some promise and then transformed into a cluster fuck of “wtf” and facepalm.jpg.  The show sucks and the fact that it does suck doesn’t inspire me to do shit faster and release it faster.

Issue #2: “ZOMG, BLAME INTERFACE FOR PLAYING MMORPGS FFFFF”

I paid $54 to play the fucking game and I will get everything i can out of it. I don’t get paid for fansubbing so fuck off. Not only that, a great deal of blame can be placed on some of  my staff who tend to be a bunch of lazy faggots who only lift a finger to complain. Oh they could do some of the work, like shifting OP/ED stuff, QCing on time, hell, even distro’ing. But no, they dump everything on me and then have the nerve to complain when something isn’t released the next day.

Issue #3: “IT’S STUCK AT DISTRO! WHY IS DISTRO TAKING SO LONG?!! FFFF”

Look, it’s not really stuck at distro. Everything is softsubbed so when I encode the file, it’s immediately uploaded to a box that can remux a new script in via remote. When it’s at distro, it either means I’m still doing something to the script (like, typesetting or shifting etc) or I’m making a torrent and sending it through a distro chan which takes 20 fucking minutes to work its way through.

Issue #4: “WHY HAVEN’T YOU TOLD US IF YOU’VE GOTTEN A TLC FOR ARMED LIBRARIANS?!”

Because there’s nothing to report. We never got a tlc cuz no one wants to fucking apply to this group for some reason. We asked and advertised and no one stepped forward and wanted to do it. Blame your fellow peers who have high enough experience and knowledge with the  language for not wanting help us. Apparently the only way we can get staff is to troll the living shit out of you people like some groups or be a well respected group.

Issue #5: “WHEN WILL EP26 BE RELEASED?!”

I don’t fucking know. I’ll do shit when I feel like it. I’m too busy enjoying mmo kthx. It’ll get done when it’ll get done or whatever other cliche you want to use

TL;DR — STFU, I can do what I want because I have to do everything in order for this group to keep doing anything. If I want to fucking play Aion with my nakama from gg, then I’ll play Aion.  If people have an issue with this, then you can blame my staff for not picking up the slack and instead, choosing to bitch at me for doing nothing (when they do nothing 90% of the time).
