Yes, this episode is filler. Well, in the sense that it was not in the manga. However, it’s clear that the anime is taking the show in a completely different direction. The previous week’s and next week’s episodes also were not in the manga.
The umpire in this episode was originally in a game against the Minnesota Coyotes; they never played against the Salmons (that I can remember). Also, they’ve removed any mention of Gibson Sr. and Jr. for some reason.
I hope it’s because there’s a seventh season, because the things we’re missing out on are some of the best parts of the whole comic.
I don’t think it’s because the manga story wasn’t released yet, because we should be on volumes 71 and 72, and they were released in February and June of last year.
As a side note: without spoiling anything, that woman in the preview… If it’s who I think it is, with her appearance now, some really important events will have to be rearranged in order to fit the rest of the story in.
My guess? I’d place my money on this being the last season; if we’re really lucky, a movie after this season will wrap up the story.
I’ll be really disappointed if that’s the case. It’s somehow feels unreasonable to “cancel” the anime now, even though the manga’s finished too.
I wouldn’t mind it if there were scanlations of the latter chapters, but if the anime really does end with an alternative ending, it will be a while till we can enjoy the true ending.
Things do seem to be a bit different and filler-like here in the middle of the season; I get the feeling they are bringing in a few characters from previous seasons on purpose — the Salmons and the Korean pitcher, to name a few — maybe because this is the end and they want to remind of of where Goro’s been prior to this or something.
But there is still time for them to get back on track with the proper story and actually end it in a way that is satisfactory and “canon” — even if they aren’t going to include all the chapters of the now-finished manga. There is one good breaking place in the manga that it seems to me they might be aiming for with this season — if they don’t waste too much more time with more fillers! And what would be left would make a great movie!
Even so, I like the fillers — I kind of hope there will be another Salmons filler where Goro and company can give them a taste of their own medicine.

And the OVAs coming with the manga, they should be (supposedly) like… OVA spin-offs, like for example: the 3 OVAs there are for FMAB, or TTGL (one OVA at least, coming with a Wii game, if i’m not mistaken), or the many Naruto OVAs (or AKA Shounen Jump Specials).
At least that’s how i see it… aw come on, just ending it here seems dumb, considering how close the story is to the original ending, w/e the ending it might be.
