So obviously there has been some major drama going on around here lately. The good news is that we’re finished Basquash! and everyone in Umai has calmed down a bit.
We considered doing Book of Bantorra this fall season if we got a TLC, but sadly no one volunteered (as far as I know). I personally am happy about that, because Book of Bantorra is a bad show, like 99% of the fall shows I’ve seen so far.
Winter season looks, so far, to be full of fail as well. While we may find a 12-ish-episode show in winter to sub, it’s kind of unlikely. Lots of the staff are taking reduced roles in fansubbing (note that we are all in several groups, not just Umai) due to school, work, etc, and this raises our standards for what we want to volunteer what little spare time we have for. That means that we’re not going to pick up a shitty series just ’cause it’s the “best of the worst” or something like that. If a good series that’s not being subbed by anyone good comes along, we’ll pick it up if we have the staff. That might mean waiting until winter season or spring season.
See where I said “if we have the staff”? That’s important. The truth is that we could pick up a fall show if we wanted to. We just don’t feel that there’s anything worth our time (as I explained above). If a new translator came along, or a new editor or a new timer, etc, we could probably put together a team of people to do a fall show (though soon it would probably be too late, so maybe this is more for the winter season). Quality could be maintained by the existing translator doing TLC (less time-intensive than translating), existing editors and QCers making sure editing and other aspects are up to Umai standards, etc. So if you’re interested in any position, head over to #umai @ irc.rizon.net and message me (Calan) and we’ll see if we can put together a team. Otherwise, the Umai “veterans” will just wait until we find a good show to do – whenever that may be.
From all the staff, we hope you’ve enjoyed Basquash! for the past 26 (probably more than that) weeks and we look forward to finding another show to fansub.
Hello guys,
We’re recruiting ONE Translation Checker for Book of Bantorra. If we do not get a TLC, we probably won’t sub anything this (fall) season.
If you are interested, you MUST know Japanese (native preferred), and are able to make out spoken words. The TV station airs without captions.

The ‘fanservice’ is so overblown there’s no way it’s not meant to be parody of fanservice in serious shows, yet people still seem to take it as serious fanservice, rather than poking fun at common tropes. Go to most boards and mention Basquash, and you’ll more likely get comments about ‘its all tits’ and nothing about the awesome action sequences, simply because people have been going crazy over the ‘fanservice’, rather than the actual main points of the show.
